WHEN SHOULD I SCHEDULE MY NEWBORN PHOTO SESSION?
Newborns are typically photographed between 3-14 days of age. Be sure to contact me to reserve your session early, preferably in your second trimester as my calendar fills quickly. If your baby has already arrived, please get in touch – I will always try my best to squeeze you in!
WHAT HAPPENS IF MY BABY IS BORN EARIER OR LATER THAN SCHEDULED?
85% of the time, the date that we pick will fall between 3 and 14 days and we won't have to reschedule. If we have a little one that decides to make their own schedule and is born outside of that window, I use Wednesday nights (after 5:30 p.m.) as plan B. So, don't worry, we'll be able to get your little one in even if we have to adjust your session date.
HOW LONG DOES THE SESSION LAST?
Newborn sessions generally last 2-3 hours. I begin each session with the newborn's individual images, and then, if you choose, I will photograph the newborn with siblings and/or family. Dad or another relative can bring the older children later in the session or they can relax in my waiting area where I have a TV, DVD player, Disney+, Snacks and toys!
WHERE WILL THE SESSION TAKE PLACE?
All newborn sessions take place at my cozy studio in Lake in the Hills, IL. Here I have everything we need for your session, including the beautiful outfits that you see and love in my photos. With a studio space and light that I know so well, we can guarantee consistent results for your photos, which is so important because you can’t get this time back!
DO YOU TAKE PICTURES OF THE FAMILY DURING NEWBORN SESSIONS?
I do love including family photos. The love and connection you feel with your baby tells an amazing story, and you’ll want to remember it … especially after the sleep deprivation haze wears off!
DO YOU USE PROPS?
In keeping with my darker bold style, I stock a variety of simple props that add to the photos without taking the focus off of baby. These include outfits bonnets, headbands, wraps, baskets, bowls, and beds. To keep the germ levels low in my newborn studio and for the safety of the baby, I do not allow any outfits/props outside of my studio collection.
HOW DO YOU ENSURE MY BABY’S SAFETY DURING A NEWBORN SESSION?
Keeping your baby safe is my #1 priority during a session! Because of that, I have taken several classes in newborn safety and newborn posing. I am newborn/child/adult CPR certified and up to date on all required vaccinations. I also have 5 1/2 years of previous experience working at Sherman Hospital taking pictures of newborns as well. I'm also a mom like you. I have 5 beautiful children and know a mother's concerns of newborn safety first hand.
Finally, since babies are just learning to regulate their own body temperatures, I keep the studio at a cozy 80-85 degrees. We may be “glistening,” but baby is warm and comfy! With that in mind, please bring a light weight shirt for you to wear during the first part of the session.
WHAT SHOULD WE WEAR TO THE SESSION?
Neutral colors look best in the studio and also keep the focus on baby in your photos. We’ll talk about what to wear during your planning consultation and ideas will also be in the session prep guide that I send to you.
CAN I ADD A MATERNITY SESSION TOO?
Yes, please do! I adore maternity sessions! They’re truly a special time to slow down and reflect on the big changes coming in your life. My maternity clients have access to my studio wardrobe, and I love to style the sessions in a beautiful and feminine manner. Here's a link to my Maternity FAQs page for more information:
